UL-11 Story on K&N Website

K&N Story By Olaf Wolff

May 14, 2010

UPDATE: Coming off our win at Phoenix, we decided to take a week off. We should be getting back in the groove of things this weekend. We need to make some repairs to the Skidfin mounting bracket. We had Lane 1 in our first heat, which is just way too tight at Firebird. Kevin hit the corner very hard and aggressive. The boat became "un-Hooked" and we skidded out just a bit before "re-Hooking" We got a one minute penalty for "Bearing out." We think this is when the bracket got damaged. We added a second shim to the Skidfin to make it bite just a bit more.

One of the most exciting heats of the weekend was our race with Paul Becker in the UL-14. Paul was right with us in the straights but we would easily out accelerate him off the exit buoy. Man the 11 was going fast; In fact our data shows us reaching 146 MPH at one point in that heat. In turn two on the final lap, Paul was "Bracketing" the turn and almost ran into us. He made an evasive maneuver and avoided a collision, but broke one of his tails in the process. Oh, our cowling FLEW off going into turn two. Wow! what a fun heat that was!

So you heard, and its true. The wind picked up so bad in PHX that we were declared the winner by points. Not exactly how we would have liked to first win in our own hull. Fact of the matter anyhow, we had qualified for the F1 final (position 1/2/3) which would have had us running against Muncey and Smets. Both those boats were looking great for the weekend and it could have been a fun final. Ms. Perkins had no chance to win the race at that point because she was in the F2 or race for position 4/5/6.

Well, back to work... More updates coming soon. Remember, the next race is in Chamberlain/Oacoma SD, June 19/20 2010. Watch it on www.ULHRA.org

Rookie driver for the UL-11 Power Punch Race Team / 94Five ROXY / K&N Engineering WINS FIREBIRD!!!!

By: Ray C.E. Fast.

The UL-11, Miss Executif Racing entry of the Power Punch Race Team / 94Five ROXY / K&N Engineering, Unlimited Light Hydroplane, was declared winner of the first race of the season at Firebird Raceway in Chandler Arizona. For the Team, this is the third consecutive win, but the first with their original hull. The team paired up with several different drivers and boats last year after their hull was nearly destroyed after shearing off a propeller blade. Topping out the field with 2025 points, the UL-11 was operating flawlessly with excess speed coming out of the tight turns at Firebird.

In one heat the boat was almost cut-off by the UL-14, but rookie driver Kevin Eacret held his line and pulled away at the end while the 14 fish-tailed and eventually took 2nd. Kevin was also surprised to hear the cowling flew off. "Actually, it looks kind of cool that way," said Kevin, "The boat felt awesome today, Good acceleration out of the corners and very stable on the straightaway's." "With the work Ed Trihey did to this boat and the tuning Scott Main is performing, we just feel real good." Kevin added.

Darren Bartels, owner of the team said, "The way this boat is flying now is due in part to the added weight from the repairs we did to the transom over the winter, couple that with the redesigned strut and shaft system, the propeller being further aft, and some increased horsepower, I think we might now have a contender here."

Rounding out the field for the weekend were Wil Muncey at 1900 Pts and Bob Smets with 1800 Pts.

The next race of the ULHRA Series is June 19th & 20th in Chamberlain South Dakota.

Off Season 2010
A lot has been happening at the UL-11 shop this winter. Final repairs to the transom are nearing completion. We ended up in Second Place for 2009 due to the marketing alignments and Lease arrangements we made with other teams. Thanks to everyone who made it possible!
